Google MUM update
I was asked a couple of times about the latest Google update in some form or another. While I had read a bit about MUM before the first interview, I wanted to learn more about it. I’m still not quite sure if I fully understand it, but it will be interesting to see how digital marketing and search engine optimization, in particular, adapts to it.

Managing SEO projects
One question was how do I manage multiple projects, as there are many projects or campaigns that a SEO specialist will work on. While managing multiple projects hasn’t traditionally been a big challenge for me, or at least it has never been a challenge I couldn’t find a way to overcome, I decided I would look up what SEO experts do to manage multiple search engine optimization projects at once. After all, there are always more efficient ways of doing things, right?

Off-Page SEO
As I was talking about Google My Business or rather, Google Business Profile, I was mildly lamenting the fact I didn’t get a chance to practice my off-page SEO skills but did get more experience with GMB in regard to local SEO. Well, it seems that working on GMB is indeed a tactic for off-page SEO. I decided to look into exactly what falls under off-page SEO tactics as I’ve been inundated with “Creating backlinks! It’s very tough and time-consuming!” It seems there are a few other tactics that fall under off-page SEO. 😊

Seasonal SEO
One question I was asked was how would I, if at all, change my criteria for choosing keywords for a seasonal local business. I really had no idea. I should have said, “I’d Google it!” It was a question that stayed in my head for quite a while after the interview and eventually prompted me to Google it! Seasonal SEO seems to be a thing.

Meta Descriptions
Meta descriptions, their optimal length and content within them was another interesting question the prompted a Google search into meta descriptions and how important are they for SEO.

Affiliate marketing
I was asked about affiliate marketing and if knew what that was. My answer seemed satisfactory, but I wanted to learn a bit more about affiliate marketing and SEO and their relationship, if any, a bit more.

Personality Traits of an SEO
Throughout all these interviews, I was asked to tell my story and what brought me to SEO. After repeating my story over and over and over again, I noticed that curiosity and a desire for self-learning seemed to be what was echoed back to me by each interviewer. I decided to do a search on what the characteristics or personality traits of an SEO specialist. Sure enough, I found an article on this!

Enterprise SEO
Throughout many of these interviews, the tools that I have used kept coming. One tool in particular came up, and that tool is Screaming Frog. I have the tool installed on my computer and I have played around with it, but after a while I realized the information it was giving back to me, in most cases I already knew all this about the site I was working on. It took me some time to give it some thought as to why someone would use Screaming Frog, unless they were lazy and didn’t want to go through the site by hand or, the site was very large. During a few interviews, the question as to the size of the site I have worked on came up. In one interview in, the company only deals with sites with thousands if not millions of pages and this changes the SEO game. In this case, Screaming Frog is very useful! It also got me curious about SEO for larger website and brought me to Enterprise SEO.

Niche SEO
While these next two references didn’t result from an interview conversation, it did result from an informational conversation with an SEO specialist during this two-week period. I ask the experience SEO if they had any advice for a new, aspiring SEO. Their advice was to pick a niche or industry and focus on really learning SEO around that. In particular, pick something that I’m interested in.

I’m not going to say the interview process is my favourite pastime or that the past few weeks were fun, but I certainly tried to take away some knowledge and ideas from the experience that could further my growth and curiosity within SEO and digital marketing, regardless of whether a job offer came from the experience or not.
